Hello!

We have been trucking along in math this week, working on equations and beginning algebra. We are almost ready for our patterns unit test next week! Also everyone has steadily improved on their multiples, this week was times 8.

In language arts we looked at adjectives and synonyms, creating acrostic poems with out names. We started with an acrostic poem about Ruth King.

We also added our first piece to our wonder wall!

In science we investigated how to clean dirty water. We used oil to help separate solids from our dirty water mix, though some spillage occurred.  Then used a sand and gravel filter to help clean the water. It took a few times, but we noticed that each time through the filter made the water a little clearer.

Unfortunately our water still smelled, so we finished off our experiment by adding charcoal to the mix. Each time we put our water through the filter, less cleaner water was produced. Some students had mixed results, but overall our water became clearer!

Our class has just started our natural resource unit for Social Studies. This week we looked atwhat we already know about resources.

They will be creating 4 small projects for each natural resource we look at (Energy, Mining, Forestry, and Fish). Eventually we will be creating a booklet out of our information. Each week we will look into a different resource, should be a lot of fun and informative.

And finally our class puzzle is coming together, only a couple more pieces left! It sure makes our door a lot prettier.

Next week we begin our resource project by looking into different energy resources, look at evapouration as a method to separate a solution, begin our words their way spelling unit, look at subject and predicate sentence forming, multiple and practice our 3 times tables, finish off our pattern unit in math, and watch Mr. Kaercher get his legs waxed! Looks like an eventful week ahead, can’t wait!

Week Two

Hello!

As we moved into our second week, we started working with patterns in math. It was a slow start, but with some practice we were doing well by the end of the week.

In language arts we looked at how to design and write a paragraph, how it includes a topic sentence, 3 to 5 supporting ideas, and a closing sentence. We discussed how a paragraph resembles a burger, the intro top bun, the meat and veggies middle, and the bottom bun closing sentence. If one piece is missing, the burger/paragraph falls apart.

This week in science we looked at the different densities of liquids. We started with observing and hypothesizing the density of five liquids, if they would mix, and which liquid they thought would be more dense.

After mixing our liquids they created a rainbow in a bottle, showing purple, blue, green, and orange (red and yellow mixed). After they shook the bottles, and some of the liquids mixed further…

Later in the week we used our scientific method to hypothesize about oil and water. A fun little experiment were everyone was able to make a home made lava lamp.

In social studies we reviewed our Canadian Regions, and using ipads researched a specific region in a group. Once finished the groups broke up and shared their funding with each other.

Next week we will continue with our math patterns (looking at real life scenerios), language arts adjectives and synonyms, start our reading synopsis, dive into social studies natural resources, and look at different ways to filter and clean dirty water in science. Should be a lot of fun!

Week One

Hello parents of Ruth King Div 2,

We finished our first full week of school! Things are starting to get settled, and routines are being established. Don’t forget to send in your notices!

On our first week of school we focused on proofreading techniques and editing written work, math games and activities involving multiplication, Canadian provinces and capital cities, and started our mixture and solution unit in science.

Friday morning we performed some experiments combining liquids and solids, hypothesizing whether they are mixtures or solutions, and trying to separate and filter out the substances.

There was a lot of learning going on, and it only took me an hour to clean up after (haha)

Friday we also took part in the Terry Fox run, lots of good participation!

Next week we will be moving into our patterns unit for math, work on building paragraphs for language arts, research regions of Canada for social studies, and investigated densities of liquids for science.

Hello students and parents of Ruth King Elementary.

Welcome to our classroom website. Here you will find weekly updates about what our class is learning about.

This first week we will be focusing on reviewing what we know from Grade 4, learning about our schedule and daily routines, and coming together as a class, learning from each other, and building a classroom community.

We have a lot of fun and engaging lessons planned for this year.
