Hello!

A little late this week, but better late than never.

We finished off our fraction and decimal unit this week, reviewing what we have learned so far: Equivilent fractions, comparing fractions, turning fractions into decimals, comparing decimals, and adding and subtracting decimals. We also started looking at collecting data and information using surveys.

We started using toondoo to make online comics. So far it is fun to use, yet some challenges with saving our work. I may change our comic website next week if we cannot resolve the issue.

Science venture visited the school on Tuesday, and our class participated in the School of Rocks activity. We learned more about the rock cycle, some of the properties of different rocks, and how to use environmentally protective techniques to mine for precious materials. The students really enjoyed the mining acrivity.

We took part in the election process this week, as we reviewed our federal election parties, discussing and debating their platforms. We participated in a mock vote, where students were able to vote for their favourite party. The Green party was victorious, winning our riding by 3 official votes.

And in art, we finally finished off our 3D perspective art! They are displayed outside our classroom.

Next week (now this week) we will finish off our government work in social studies, look into bar graphs and probability in math, continue working on our comic in language arts, and start our rock PowerPoint projects in science.

Hope you had a good weekend. Fun Fair is Thursday, Track day is Friday.

Hello!

An exciting week with a trip to see the Victoria Symphony on Thursday, and our class dance routing for the Friday shuffle.

In language arts, we started looking into comic books, discussing the attributes and unique features that can captivate our attention.

In math, we continued working with place value for the thousandth decimal place. We worked on subracting decimals, with all students doing well with the quiz.

In social studies, we learned about the different political parties of BC and Canada. We took this a step further by creating political campaign posters for the Canadian Federal election.

In science, we experimented with making different types of rocks out of crayons. We started with carving and cutting crayons to make sediment. By applying some pressure, our sediment combined to form a sedimentary rock (with mixed results). We then placed our sedimentary into some hot water, and used our hands and text books to apply heat and pressure. We pressurised the rocks overnight, creating metamorphic rocks. Finally, we took pieces of each crayon rock, and added it into a heat source, melting it, creating crayon magma. After our magma cooled, it formed an igneous crayon rock.

Next week we will finish off our fraction and decimal unit in math, start working on creating our own comics in language arts, host an election to vote for our federal party candidate in social studies, participate in a science venture rock and roll activity for science, and look into food for French.

Our basket for the Fun Fair auction is looking a little slim… We have been given the task to collect spa, bath bombs, romance novels, and chocolate for our basket. Being those items in!

Have a good long weekend, and see you Tueaday!

Hello!

Our Field trip to the museum and Beacon Hill park on Monday was a success! We learned many things about the first nations culture of British Columbia, including their environmental practices and residential school experience. After, we enjoyed lunch at Beacon Hill park and played at the park.

In language arts, we wrote about our experience at the museum, discussing one part that stuck with us the most. We also completed the district reading assessment for grade 5, reading a booklet about storm chasers in BC. Finally, we completed our novel studies by sharing what we read about, our quotes from the book, and reading our poems to the class.

In math, we looked at adding decimals, and making sure that our place values line up. A couple of students learned that it is really important to line up our place values, so that we do not make simple mistakes.

In social studies, we discussed a little more about types of government, and then dove into our Canadian indirect democracy. We watched a couple of videos explaining our electoral system, focusing on first past the post. A couple of students discussed why voting turnout was so low during the last election, and felt the first past the post method may leave voters feeling like their vote doesn’t count. We then discussed proportional representation, and how there is a growing push for rating candidates, giving more choice for leadership. Finally, we looked at voting ideology, the left, center, and right wing beliefs of politics. We had a discussion about each ideology, and took a personality quiz, discussing what each students thoughts were on different subjects. An example would be should rich people may more taxes, or should Canada spend less money on military. Our class became quite engaged with the debate topics, sparking further discussion, and enhancing the learning of the class. By the end each student had a number about where they would fit in the left center right scale, with most students center left, and a couple center right. It was very interesting listening to the opinions of each student, and their logic behind it.

In science, we started looking at the different types of rocks, and learning about the rock cycle. We looked at and described igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks, their different features, and what makes them uniquely different. We then learned about the rock cycle, how each type of rock is formed, and how each type of rock can become a different type of rock. So melting a rock and cooling it becomes igneous, eroding rocks can form together to become sedimentary, and heat and pressure can create metamorphic rocks.

In art, we put our finishing touches on our mothers day gifts. The students worked quite hard on them, and they turned out beautifully, so I hope you enjoy them.

We also had some special guests come by on Wednesday, the Brazilian women’s sevens rugby team! They led our class through a kicking drill, challenged some students to a couple of competitions, and signed autographs for everyone. They are playing this weekend at Westhills, if you are interested in getting tickets, a special code “COMMUNITY” might get you a discount.

Next week we will look at subtracting decimals, and hopefully reinforce our place value system further. In language arts, we will look at comic books, and the different features that are used. In social studies, we will look at the different political parties of BC and Canada, and have a voting election in preparation for next year’s federal election. In science, we will practice the rock cycle using crayons, and form our own types of crayon rocks. We will all hopefully be finished our 3D landscape art as well.

Thursday our intermediate students will be going to Belmont to watch the victoria symphony perform; sound be a fun experience.

Have a good weekend, especially Sunday, and see you Monday.

Hello!

Another short week gone by as Friday is a Pro D day. We had our jump rope for heart today, if you were raising money, bring it in asap.

In math this week, we continued working with thousandth decimals and ordering decimals. We will be working on adding decimals next week, which will reinforce the use of using place values for decimals.

In language arts, we finished off our novel study, collected phrases from our books, and created some poetry to reflect the residential school experience. Next week we will share our work with the class.

In science, we continued working on coding using the chrome books. Some of the students have really gotten a handle on it, and have started making games and creative art using computer programs.

In social studies, we continued to learn about different types of government. Each day this week we practiced what it would be like living in a different government. Monday was direct democracy, where everyone voted on everything: washroom breaks, water breaks, subjects, which materials to use,, ect. It ended up taking a lot of extra time, and was not very productive. Tuesday we practiced a dictatorship government, with very strict rules and punishments: no talking, no breaks, always sitting, must be on task. Each time they broke a rule, they earned an X, and each X was worth 2 minutes at lunch time (jail). Though you could try and bribe the dictator with points to remove some Xs. It was actually a very productive day, though many students were not having fun… Wednesday was indirect democracy, where the students voted for representatives to make rules for them. Not sure whether the students just didn’t like being told specific rules, or the representatives became a little too power hungry, but by lunch there was a new vote, and new representatives. Thursday was oligarchy, where the boys ruled the morning, the girls ruled the midday, and those with the top quiz mark ruled the afternoon. The boys were rather lenient, and only gave themselves a couple of benefits over the girls. The girls however were quite power hungry and full of vengence, making a lot more rules that targeted the boys. At lunch, the top quiz mark students created a couple of rules involving taxes. Overall, the students learned that they like being the ones that have power, and really dislike being the ones without power.

In art, we finished off our doors! We also worked more on our 3D landscape artwork.

Next week we will be adding decimals in math, working on a reading and writing assessment for language arts, complete a requiz on types of government, and start looking into our election system in social studies, and start our unit on the rock cycle for science.

Monday is our field trip to the museum and beacon hill park! The bus leaves at 9am.

Have a good long weekend!
